How To Harness Nervous Energy For Good - Work It Daily

How To Harness Nervous Energy For Good - Work It Daily Being nervous is a natural human condition. It is also beneficial to performance. When we really want something, we get nervous. Related: Why You Need To Change Your Job Search Behavior I was a high school teacher for six years. This was not my first career. Before my first teaching year began, I remember talking to my best friend who is also a human behavior specialist. I told her my fears. I told her that I was nervous that I would not be a good enough teacher. What she told me made me change the way I viewed nervousness forever. She said, “Being nervous is a good thing. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t be nervous. Because you are nervous about being good enough, I am certain that you will be good enough and probably even better.” Being nervous is a great way to assess how much you have vested in an opportunity or venture. For example, if you are not nervous before an interview, you may not be truly interested in the job or company. Recognizing nervousness and directing the energy can be a huge benefit to job searching. Employers are looking for employees who will be engaged at work. Studies show that 80% of employees are disengaged. They are looking for that unicorn that will come into the office each and every day excited to get started and happy to be a part of the team. If you walk into an interview as cool as a cucumber, what does that convey to a potential employer? So, if you are nervous, good for you! An interview is a big deal. You only get seven seconds to make a good first impression and that’s not much. You have to earn your position and the interview is just the first step. Remember, hiring is discrimination. Interviews are a huge part of your professional career so it’s worth harnessing all of your energy to prepare. Being nervous is a sign that something is important to you. If an interview is the cause of your nerves, take that energy and put it into preparing for your interview. What part of the interview worries you? If you think you do not have enough qualifications, recognize you have enough to get you in the door. Look at the job description, write down all of the qualifications they are looking for and then brainstorm a list of things you have done that prove you meet those qualifications and write them down. This is a great exercise for building interview confidence and being prepared. And it doesn’t stop there. You want to know all you can about the company so you can walk in the door and show them why you would make a great team member. Are you a match for the company culture? Show you are by acting and dressing the part. If you find that you are not nervous about a pending interview, assess what this lack of jitters could mean. Are you not interested or are you overly confident? Either is a poor attitude to walk in the door with. If you are overly confident, dot your i’s and cross your t’s to make sure you are truly prepared. Rehearse interview questions and study company culture. If you are not interested, it’s time to assess what you want out of your next job and what kind of company you would like to partner with. Need more interview guidance? #MakingTime A Day in the Life of a Maternity Wellness Marketing Maven and Mom to 5

MakingTime A Day in the Life of a Maternity Wellness Marketing Maven and Mom to 5 Women can do anything but not everything. As the largest zugnglich career community for women, we at Fairygodboss realize that balance is a myth, and that picking what to prioritize when everything feels important on a day-to-day basis isnt always easy. In the MakingTime series, women share with us how, for one day, they chose to spend their most precious resurce time.--WhoDaniela JensenWhatVP of Strategy at entrepreneurWhereBarrington, Rhode Island--530 a.m.Alarm goes off at 530am.Thank goodness its for Chris. Today is his morning to work out, which means another 20 minutes under the covers for me I roll over and snuggle in as I start thinking about what the day holds. Which of our kids needs to be where? And when? With five well, now four at home, since Riley is a freshmen at college this year orchestrating their schedules is quite literally a full-time job in itself.Cameron and Ian have travel soc cer (of course at the same time, but in field locations across town). Does Lila have play practice or tennis lessons? Better check the calendar. I roll out of bed, slide on cozy slippers and head downstairs to the kitchen. Hanging on the wall is an oversized blotter calendar the big paper ones your parents (and my parents) had from Staples. Each daily box is quite literally over-scheduled with activities. For a pretty tech-savvy gal, this analog format serves us best.Today readsChris to Minnesota. 10 a.m. flight.Cameron / Ian Travel Soccer 4 p.m.Lila Last Tennis Session 330 p.m. group carpoolI breath a sigh of relief. its not my turn to drive the rowdy five-kid carpool to tennis lessons. I boil water for matcha (a gift from the gods) and quickly scroll through schmelzglas on my phone. Im expecting revised die lines from our packaging partners in China. Dont binnensee it at first glance, but notice a message about our affiliate marketing program that needs my attention. I tell Siri to remind me at 1100 a.m. to address this. Ill often tell Siri to remind me of things throughout the day, or Ill text myself and leave it as unread. I start making school + work lunches.645 a.m.Boys are heading out to the bus stop and girls are awake, milling around the kitchen as they ponder what to have for breakfast. Chris returns from the YMCA and we do the proverbial baton pranke off. He picks up from where I left off in the kitchen finishing lunches, cleaning up from breakfast and emptying the dish welchesher, while I head upstairs to shower and get dressed. We trade off once mora when he heads up to shower. Ill do the final morning push to get everyone out the door.8 a.m.Lila is teary. She doesnt want to go to school. Mondays are always hard for her after a weekend of family fun. Plus, we went ghosting brde night (its like ding dong ditch, except you leave candy on the doorstep of friends houses) so shes probably overtired. She whines that her day is sooo boring and long, a nd that she hates leaving home. Why does each day of second grade have to take that long? I find a pen on the counter. I draw a wave on the palm of her hand with a heart underneath, for the strength of the ocean and all my love. I close her fist and squeeze it tightly. Shes never been one for school. In these moments, Im reminded that although she just turned 7, shes still my baby. (Side note Im laughing at myself even writing that, as I would have argued a few years back, as a mom of much smaller people, that 7 was practically an adult).I walk Lila to her elementary school at the end of our street. We talk about finding the good in her day instead of all the things she isnt looking forward to. We take the trail through the wooded path that leads to the side of her school. Shes pulled herself together, but asks if I can take her to tennis lessons today, rather than riding with the carpool of other kids in town. I fold like a cheap tent and tell her that since its the last lesson, Il l bring her. I hustle home, noticing the trees are fully peaking in autumn colors. I get the below text from Dan, President at Premama and add my name to the 945 a.m. Orange Theory exercise class. My company, Premama, is a vitamin company that focuses on maternity wellness. We create supplements designed to support women at every stage of motherhood, from preparing your body for pregnancy on through postpartum. Right now, were doing an eight-week health and wellness challenge in the office. For me, self care is the hardest thing to fit into my schedule, so I was elated to commit to something like this giving each of us the chance to make time for workouts during office hours three times a week during the eight-week challenge.I toss work-out clothes into my work bag and see the pen I used to write on Lilas hand still on the counter. I call Cam over and quickly draw the same wave and heart on Camerons hand. She saw me do this for Lila and gives me a big open-hearted smile. As Chris co mes to say goodbye, I take his hand and do the same. Cam and I squeeze him and then rush to the car, pick up her girlfriend, and head to school. As the girls exit the car in the drop off line, Cam throws up her hands in the shape of a heart. Something shes done since kindergarten. As I wait for the cars in front of me to exit, I put on the rest of a How I Built This podcast. It makes the 30-minute morning commute into Providence mora tolerable.9 a.m.I pull into the parking lot of Orange Theory just before 9 a.m. I text my mom to see if she can cover me after school with pick ups since I offered to take Lila to tennis. Thank god for her. My parents moved to Rhode Island when they retired and live just a stones throw down the road, in a cute little beach cottage by the sea. She and my dad are a regular part of our lives and, in truth, a driving factor in us keeping our family afloat. While sitting in the car, I open my computer, steal a Wi-Fi signal from the Whole Foods next door, and answer 30 minutes of emails before meeting Dan for a workout. After the class, we stand outside in the fresh air trying to catch our breath. He debriefs me on Venture Capital meetings he had in NY last Thursday and Friday. We banter about budgets, ideal capital partners, and the value we think they can add to the business.1100 a.m.I land at my desk. Didnt have time to wait for showers at OT before getting into the office. Gross, but true. Maybe I would feel bad if we werent in challenge mode, but probably not. I bomb through the first portion of the scribbled to-do list in my notebook while trying not to notice the little number in the eckball of my inbox rising.Sadly, theres a direct correlation between the number of unread emails I have and my blood pressure. Gulp. I remind myself, theyll all still be there tonight. Too often, I (you? we?) get caught up in our inboxes. I learned a hack from a podcast (probably while sitting in traffic) where Ashton Kutcher told Arianna Huffington of productive, he makes to-do lists and focuses on that before he gets into his inbox. Im paraphrasing here, but it was something like emails being everyone elses to-do list for you, and you can get sucked into inefficiency. I see truth in that.Shortly, I join a conference call with our PR gruppe to review press opportunities and pitches. I address emails about our affiliate program and can finally turn off the reminder that keeps buzzing on my phone. I get through a few more tasks and team discussions on 2019 plans. I hound our suppliers for ingredient verifications needed for Project Verified Non-GMO and USDA Organic certifications.157 p.m.Run (literally) out of the office. Good thing Im still in workout clothes ha I get to the car and see this text from Chris. I smile, feeling lucky. I join my call and listen to a pitch about Paid Social and SEM marketing capabilities. Curious to hear if they have any thoughts or insights beyond what were already doing. Its more or less the sam e.245 p.m.Pick Lila up from school and take her to tennis lessons. Im feeling slightly frazzled by my unaddressed inbox, but try to focus on listening to how her day was. I can hear my phone buzzing in my bag. We stop in the Dennys drive thru on the way to the indoor courts the next town over. The speaker on the other end says they dont have milkshakes. Really? I swear I saw them on the sign? Apparently they are called Frostys. Who knew?I get Lila off and take 30 minutes in the parking lot of tennis to answer a few texts pertaining to work and an email on my phone. My team is comprised of ninjas one that focuses on a consumer affairs and the other on brand management. They have a solid handle on the day to day tasks but were looking for input on customer relations feedback and an outbound email approval. I suggest a few changes. Things seem to be rocking and rolling at the office. I head home to take Cameron to soccer. Lilas taking the tennis carpool home and Ian has a ride. Onward and upward.5 p.m.Back at home, I flip open my computer and leave it on the kitchen counter. I pop on email while ordering take out for dinner. Meal planning isnt my strength. Especially when my husband is traveling. My mom is still here and god bless her soul, happens to be folding laundry and laughing with the kids about how they bombarded us with water balloons when we ghosted their house the night before. She hangs with them while I run out to get Cameron and Ian. And pick up takeout. After dinner its help with Homework. Showers. Bedtime.830 p.m.Its 830, and the house is quiet. The girls are sound asleep, the boys are watching TV, and Im at my desk at home. Our orange tabby cat is circling at my feet. I catch up on the days activity for the next two hours, send some emails about marketing budgets, forecasts, international sales, amazon inventory, and try to hurdle a few product development tasks.10 p.m.At 10 p.m., the boys say goodnight and begrudgingly head upstairs. The perks of having google Wi-Fi? No more arguing about bedtimes. The internet (which means their phones and our Apple TV) goes dark at 10. They think this is so unfair. I think this is genius. As I am making my to-do list for tomorrow (thank you, Ashton Kutcher), I add Document Day for Fairygodboss.Keep at it, ladies.--Interested in contributing to Fairygodboss MakingTime series? Those Impossible to Find Newbies

Those Impossible to Find Newbies Back when I was in technology recruiting, I remember that when a hiring manager said they wanted an inexperienced hire, I would mentally groan. Their words after that were scattered as my brain subjugated its listening function to a frustrated internal monologue. Their rhetoric, always the same, would come across choppy, as my brain filled in the conversation with what else I could be doing that day or what I was going to eat for lunch. Phrases like Someone who just gets it Couple of good projects under their belt Bright Solid achievements Great aptitude Ill teach them would be pronounced. As I remember, I would be nodding and looking particularly interested in what they were saying. The unfortunate reality is that when I would get back to the office, I would have nothing to go on. If a company wants to hire a Java developer, its easy. Find someone whos great at Jav a with a nice enough personality andtemperamentto be a decent employee. The problem is when companies want to hire someone that could be a great employee, someone with guts, determination, and intelligence, but no verifiable professional experience. When you have nothing to go on but the intangibles, thats when it gets tricky. Thats when recruiting becomes more art than science, and maybe more luck than procedure.I bring this up because were doing some tech hiring ourselves. I am again reminded of the impossibility that we impart to recruiting its too easy to forget about what you need to get accomplished, and think instead about some murky, personal ideal of an employee that just doesnt really exist. We want aptitude, not experience, but demand immediate performance and task completion. Its really easy to get in the way of our own recruiting efforts, as well as to be unfair to candidates. But were doing our best, even though its of course taking longer than we would like. I have to give a shout out to ZipRecruiter, where we have posted our most recent job. They advertise their services through Recruiter.com, but I hadnt ever actually used the service that we were advertising. So far, so good we have some well-qualified candidates and a solid first round of interviews. If we have a new hire next week, it means that our luck is still with us. If we dont, well, it might be karma coming back to me for ignoring some of those hiring managers. But in any case, its interesting to be on the other side of the fence still looking, accidentally, for the impossible.

Flying on Mars

Flying on Mars Flying on Mars Flying on MarsA helicopter that could fly in Mars thin atmosphere99 percent less dense than Earthsseems an impossible dream. Yet NASAs Jet Propulsion Lab has developed a lightweight, autonomous, helicopter that does just thatwhile surviving night temperatures down to -160F.Such mobility would open vast horizons to scientists trying to understand the potential of Mars to support life. Starting with Pathfinder in 1997, the United States has landed four robotic rovers on Mars. Yet the most successful of them, Curiosity, traversed only 13 miles since landing in 2011.Greater exploration will require more mobility. The small helicopter developed by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory promises to do just that. The 2.1-kg helicopter consists of a fuselage with power and control systems, dual counter-rotating rotors, solar cells for recharging the battery, and landing gear. Members of the JPL Mars Helicopter team mount the unit to a test system that will simulate the red planets low gravity and thin atmosphere. emPhoto Jet Propulsion Laboratory/emThe concept dates back to the late 1990s, when models showed that a fast-spinning ultralight helicopter could fly on Mars. It has taken 20 years to develop small and powerful enough batteries, computers, flight control systems, and solar cells that make this possible, said MiMi Aung. She is the helicopters project manager at JPLs Solar System Exploration Directorate.Still, it is a lot to fit into one package. You May Also Like Apollo 500 Years AfterWhen we began the project, I told everyone that they had to be good at their disciplinebut they also had to be a systems engineer, Aung said. Everything you do individually touches everything else, especially when were making something so small and so light. So you cant just design the best control system or rotor for you. It has to balance mass, volume, power, and energy for the mission. That led to many unique designs, starting with the rot or. In order to achieve lift in the thin Martian atmosphere, the rotors needed to be large (1.2 meters) and rotate rapidly (40-45 revolutions per second). Yet the designers could not afford the mass and volume of a tail rotor to cancel the torque of the main blades. So they opted for a pair of counter-rotating rotors whose torques cancelled out one another.JPL worked with NASA Langley Research Center and AeroVironment to build a custom motor that could achieve those speeds. Using advanced algorithms developed at JPL, AeroVironment built a 23-pole-pair brushless d.c. motor. It included square wires to squeeze out every possible gain in efficiency. The first prototype took 100 hours to hand wind. The fuselage consisted of a central battery surrounded by five circuit boards, which formed a cube that opens on top to connect with the drive. Aungs team modeled everything, even the insulating air gap between the circuit boards and the fuselage skin, then wrapped the skin with a DuPont Kapto n polyimide film spray-coated with four different metals to modulate the amount of heat that entered and escaped. The heart of the fuselage also contained temperature sensors and a resistance strip for heating. The rotors, solar cells, and landing gear were designed to survive the Martian night without heating, Aung said. We needed to keep the fuselages battery, computer, and sensors warm enough to function. The system also needed a sophisticated degree of autonomy. On one hand, it needed to translate general commands from flight controllers on Earthphotograph these spots, sleep and recharge at this point, wake up at this timeinto operational commands.Yet it needed to navigate flying conditions on Mars. Because the atmosphere is so thin, it provides less of a blanket. As a result, the helicopter must respond faster than any human could to changing air dynamics.Testing a prototype also posed a challenge. We had to invent how to test a flying helicopter in thin air, Aung said.To do that, they filled a large, hermetically sealed room with carbon dioxide (95 percent of Mars atmosphere), then dropped the pressure to Mars levels. Working with Caltech, they built a bank of fans that, despite the low pressure, simulated winds in a thin atmosphere. Then they attached a robotic arm to the helicopter, giving it additional lift to emulate Mars low gravity. After instrumenting the helicopter, they flew it through a series of maneuvers, some in simulated wind storms, to see if its flight behavior matched their models predictions. It did well enough to earn a place on the upcoming Mars 2020 mission.Recommended for You Iron Man LivesOn Mars, its primary mission is to prove it can fly, take photos, recharge, and follow commands autonomously. Aung estimates that the helicopter is capable of flying nearly 1 kilometer at 9-10 meters/second for 90 seconds before recharging. For Mars 2020, however, NASA will throttle it back. It will move 2-3 meters per second for 300 meters while flyin g no higher than 5 meters. That will change in the future. She envisions helicopter scouting ahead for rovers and eventually humans. But helicopters are unlikely to every carry humans on Mars. The dynamics get sloppy because you need much larger rotors, and the blades get sloppytheres a resonance problemwhen you get that big, she said. But we think a future helicopter with a 3-to-3.5-meter rotor could carry a 10-to-15-kilogram payload at up to 20 meters per second and fly five to eight minutes before it has to recharge. Thats a large enough payload to do significant science.Alan Brown is senior editor.
